97. Coronation of Francis I of Habsburg as King of Hungary.
The lithograph depicts the royal oath-taking ceremony held on the site of present-day Corvin Square on 6 August 1792. The king appears surrounded by prelates, magnates, and richly attired mounted noble banderia. In the background rise the buildings of Buda Castle, dominated by the Church of Our Lady (Matthias Church). The print appeared in the twenty-plate commemorative work by Elek Jordánszky and Franz Xaver Seidemann entitled “Descriptio biographicarum viginti imaginum, delecta ex Francisci Augustissimi quondam imperatoris Austriae, regis Hungariae...” (Pozsony, 1836), illustrating important episodes in the ruler’s life. The lithographs were produced in the Höfelich workshop in Vienna after drawings by Franz Wolf.
