The work was first published in 1903. On the first page of the volume, the author's autograph inscription reads: "Thomas Mann Budapest 12. I. 22." The writer visited Budapest several times, first in 1913. In January 1922, he gave a reading of "Zauberberg" and "Herr und Hund" at the Academy of Music. At that time, Prime Minister István Bethlen also hosted a soiree in his honour.
