90. Antal Szerb (1901-1945), writer.
... Signed typescript in English entitled "Hungary in the Older English Literature".
The study was not published during Antal Szerb's lifetime. It was probably written around 1940 for The Society of the Hungarian Quarterly. This society published the English-language journal The Hungarian Quarterly, which was launched in 1936. The last issue appeared in the summer of 1941, but in 1943 another book was published in Budapest entitled A Companion to Hungarian Studies. Antal Szerb wrote the chapter on Hungarian literature in this volume, which was intended as a tool of cultural diplomacy.
The study first appeared in Hungarian translation in the May 2007 issue of the journal Jelenkor. The translator, András Beck, addressed the questions raised by the manuscript in a meticulous accompanying study (The Case of Antal Szerb and Hungarian Studies. Philological Digressions on a Manuscript. Jelenkor, May 2007). The original English version was published a year later in issue 49 of The Hungarian Quarterly.
