... Melly a’ két magyar hazábann találtatható növevényeknek megesmerésére vezet, a’ Linné alkotmánya szerént. I-II. rész [bound together].

Debreczenbenn, 1807. Csáthy. XVI+608p. Inscribed by Sámuel Diószegi.

The first Hungarian botanical description based on Linne's system. The idea was János Földi's, but he could only complete the zoological part due to his premature death. Samuel Diószegi and his brother-in-law, Mihály Fazekas began to create a Hungarian botanical terminology using his manuscripts. The book was received with mixed reactions and was not a bestseller. For years, unsold copies were kept in the cellar of the pastor's house (Diószegi was a Reformed priest); therefore, the authors abandoned the idea of a revised edition. Nevertheless, its use for almost a century shows the work's success.

Our copy is a relic of the history of culture because of the inscription on the verso of the flyleaf: „Tiszteletes Túdós Professor Budai Ésaiás Úrnak ajánlják az Irók Debr. 27 (?) Aug 1807.” The manuscript is from Samuel Diószegi, pastor and deacon in Debrecen. He had a close friendship with one of the most prominent teachers of the Reformed College of Debrecen, the recipient of the dedication, the scholar Ézsaiás Budai. After his death, Budai also wrote his eulogy, published in full in the "Honnyi levelek" column of the "Magyar Kurir" journal. The value of this piece is further enhanced by the polymath teacher's inscribed autograph on the title page.
