75. László Moholy-Nagy (1895–1946), painter and photographer.
... Original pencil drawing.
On a military field-postcard, the artist portrayed his fellow soldier, the chemist Dr János Proszt (later member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences). On the verso appears Proszt’s note: “Nagy László frch rajza. Éppen mikor ezt a levelet írtam” (Drawing by Fähnrich László Nagy. Just as I was writing this letter). The abbreviation refers to the German equivalent of the ensign rank (Fähnrich). Moholy-Nagy enlisted in May 1915 and served on the Galician front from March 1916 until the autumn of 1917. At the probable date of the drawing (spring 1917), both men were serving in the 32nd Field Howitzer Regiment; Proszt held the rank of lieutenant, while Moholy-Nagy was still an ensign. Art historians know numerous comparable drawings. In his study Babits Mihály és Moholy-Nagy László (Tiszatáj, 2008), Lajos Sipos wrote: “During the war Moholy-Nagy found a remarkable use for his talent in drawing. He produced beautiful maps, some of which even reached the General Staff. Later, he began making pencil drawings and illustrated postcards for friends… With black and coloured pencils, he recorded characteristic figures and scenes of military life…”
