The author, a professor at the University of Königsberg and a founding figure of German Idealism, published the first edition of one of his principal works here. Like the Critique of Pure Reason, issued seven years earlier, the book exerted an immense influence on almost all later philosophical thought. Its importance is reflected in the numerous editions published during Kant’s lifetime and in its subsequent translation into nearly every major language.
