The renowned mathematician came up with his pen name based on the Latin form of his first names (Ludovicus Carolus). The heroine of his world-famous children’s novels may have been inspired by one of his Oxford colleagues and friends, Henry Liddell's daughter (although Carroll consistently denied this).
