62. Respublica et status regni Hungariae

(Leyden), 1634. Ex officina Elzeviriana. 330+(1)p. With decorative copperplate title page within pagination.

The volume on Hungary in the famous ‘Respublicae’ series of the Elzevir workshop. It also includes domestic sources, such as the Admonitions of St. Stephen, the laws of Charles Robert and Sigismund, and the articles of the 1603 Diet of Pozsony. In addition to these, perhaps the most significant text is the geological study by György Werner, judge and teacher from Eperjes, on the medicinal waters of Hungary, which also contains interesting ethnographic details. The compiler of the volume was probably a Czech scholar who had fled to the Low Countries. The title page shows the coat of arms of the country at the top and a picture of a Hun horseman at the bottom, which, according to Apponyi, was based on Márton Schödel's Disquisitio.

19th-century half leather, with marbled endpapers. Spine richly gilt.

Apponyi: 828.; RMK III 6190., 7593.
