The geometry textbook prepared for Archduke Joseph, the future Emperor Joseph I, first appeared in Vienna in 1686 and was reissued there the following year; all later editions were printed in Augsburg. In addition to the geometrical diagrams, Birckenstein incorporated 110 views of Hungarian fortresses engraved by Justus van der Nypoort. These panoramas were executed partly from direct observation during the artist’s stay in Hungary and partly from foreign sources. In the foreground of the fortresses, Nypoort placed various figures and scenes, making the engravings valuable not only for military history but also for the study of contemporary costume. Several of the fortresses depicted in the volume have since disappeared entirely, while some of the views survive nowhere else.
