6. Letter in Hungarian by Albert Máté[?]

The author provides news concerning the Ottomans to an unidentified recipient. The opening salutation reads: “Zolgalatomat ajanlom kegyelmednek mint ioakaro uramnak” (I offer my service to Your Grace, my gracious lord). He then reports information received from a citizen of Gyarmat (presumably present-day Kőhídgyarmat), according to which “ma harmad ebéd korba erkezet az budai basa esztergamba” (today, around noon, the Pasha of Buda arrived in Esztergom). The writer can almost certainly be identified with Albert Matthay, mentioned in Kálmán Benda’s study “A királyi Magyarország tiszti címtára. 1607–1608.” (Directory of the Officers of Royal Hungary, 1607–1608), who served as a guard (porkoláb) at the palisaded fort of Szőgyén in 1607–1608. The small stronghold had in fact been erected only shortly before, in 1606, around the village church in order to monitor Ottoman movements at Esztergom and Párkány. The recipient may have been the captain of Érsekújvár.
