The first Hungarian translation of the ancient author's famous and widely read work throughout Europe was first published in 1701. Prominent men's biographies, which provide moral and political lessons, were gladly used in schools already in the ethical and Latin language education of younger students. Balog was a teacher in Sopron from 1682, and he prepared his work for his students. He translated the original text word for word, precisely following the Latin structures precisely, so he often transcribed it in a grammatically non-Hungarian way. His work remained popular until the beginning of the 19th century, and several editions were published. Dávid Czvittinger and Péter Bod considered it an exemplary piece of Hungarian translation literature and a useful read.
