This novel, which plays a significant role in both Hungarian and world literature, is the earliest and most sophisticated work of its kind that has survived. Set in Egypt, it tells the story of Theagenes and Chariklea, who become lovers after many adventures. Written in the 5th century AD, it became famous throughout Europe during the Renaissance, fundamentally defining the Western novel genre, and we encounter several adaptations of it in Hungarian Romanticism. The curator of the work, German historian Martin Kraus, was a follower of Melanchthon. At the end of the volume, a separate treatise can be read.
