57. János Arany (1817-1882), poet and Secretary General of the Academy.

Autograph signature on a fragment of the last page of the minutes of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences' general assembly.

The Academy unanimously elected the poet to its ranks, first as a corresponding member and then immediately as a full member, during its general meeting on 15 December 1858. On 31 October 1859, he read his inaugural treatise entitled “Zrínyi és Tasso”. After the death of Antal Csengery, Baron József Eötvös nominated him for the vacant position of secretary, which he assumed on 26 January 1865. He became secretary general in 1870, and held the position until 1879, when his third resignation was finally accepted.

Our item is the last incomplete page of a multi-page document (about a third of the top is missing). It is also signed by two board members: Count György Károlyi and Ferenc Pulszky.
