Several variants of this edition are recorded by Éva Knapp. The author was one of the peculiar, restless figures of the late 18th and early 19th century, remembered for the self-fashioned legends surrounding him. Until recently, Berei Farkas András remained little researched and largely unappreciated by literary history. A wandering poet and occasional verse-writer, he was constantly in search of patrons. He was on several occasions supported by Palatine Lipót Sándor, which allowed him to call himself the Palatine’s “court poet.” Upon the Palatine’s tragic death, Berei mourned him with a poem.

The value of the present piece is heightened by the author’s autograph inscription: “Ezen két Darab Diétai Munkát ajándék Név alatt adom, M. G. Teleky Sámuel Nagyságának, ha valahogy Kezéhez juthatna (mivel a’ Gróf most Pesten nintsen).” (I present these two Parts of my Diet Work as a gift, under my name, to His Excellency Count Sámuel Teleky, if it might somehow reach his hands, since the Count is not currently in Pest.)

Damaged, contemporary paper.
