5. Pál Nyáry (c. 1550–1607), captain-general of Várad.

... Autograph signed official letter in Latin to Archduke Matthias of Habsburg, commander-in-chief.

The author requests the archduke’s support in matters concerning his estates in Turóc County. As he is serving the ruler far from his properties, he is unable to protect them from lawsuits and various encroachments.

Pál Nyáry was one of the heroes of the anti-Ottoman wars and proved himself in numerous important offices. He served as commander of Eger during the siege of 1596. After mutinous mercenaries arrested him and surrendered the fortress to the Ottomans, he was brought before a military tribunal but ultimately acquitted. As one of the defenders of Várad, which had returned to Royal Hungarian control, he successfully repelled Ottoman besiegers and was therefore appointed captain-general of Várad in 1598. Later he became lord steward to Prince Bocskai and signed the Treaties of Vienna and Zsitvatorok in the prince’s name.
