(Pest, 1837-1838.) n.p. (48)p.+12pl(s)..
In 1834, the greatest sculptor of the age decided to publish a monumental series of pictures presenting notable events in Hungarian history to an educated audience. Due to financial difficulties, the venture got off to a slow start, with few subscriptions to the 1836 edition. Although he won over the greatest engravers of the age, Domokos Perlaszka and Sámuel Lehnhardt, and appealed to the German bourgeoisie of Pest-Buda with bilingual (Hungarian-German) texts, only 12 plates were published by 1838, and no more appeared. It is not known why, but in the meantime the concept changed, and the final pages brought to life events from ancient Rome and Greek history. The publisher sought to enlist the support of the aristocracy and public figures, dedicating each page to a distinguished individual. Among them we find the names of Count Ferenc Széchényi, Count Móric Sándor and Count József Brunszvik, as well as András Fáy. Each page of the large-format (420 × 590) album is accompanied by a two-page description. Given its turbulent publishing history, it is no wonder that this publication, which was released in a small number of copies, is virtually unknown; to our knowledge, only one copy has appeared at auction in the past half-century.
Slightly damaged contemporary paper. The title is printed on a label in the centre of the front cover.
