43. Ferrotypes of Ferenc Lónyay (1861-1945)...
... and a daguerreotype of his grandfather, László Lónyay (1791-1865). 5 photographs.
A five-piece family photo set containing two exceptionally interesting early photographic types. The 1848 daguerreotype depicts a uniformed figure, presumably László Lónyay, former district magistrate of Borsod County. According to Szinnyei, he served as a National Guard major in 1848; however, other sources do not confirm this, and Gábor Bona’s authoritative work also omits him. Dimensions: 81 × 72 mm. The “40M” punch in the lower left corner indicates that the plate was of French manufacture, as Hungarian daguerreotypists imported such plates. His grandson Ferenc Lónyay’s portraits survive as ferrotypes, so together the two techniques vividly illustrate two distinct phases in nineteenth-century photography and its technological development.
