39. Sándor Weöres (1913-1989), poet. Manuscript notebook.

Inscribed: „Tompa Kálmánnak barátsággal, szeretettel ajánlom ezt a fogalmazványfüzetet-véletlenhalmazt, Weöres Sanyi. 1955. Mikulás.” (To Kálmán Tompa, with friendship and love, I dedicate this collection of notes and random thoughts, Sanyi Weöres. Christmas 1955).

The recipient was a physician and art collector whose collection included works by Mihály Munkácsy, Pál Szinyei Merse, and Tivadar Csontváry Kosztka, alongside an extensive library. He maintained close ties with contemporary artists and was often referred to as the “doctor of folk writers.” His friendship with Weöres is well documented; in 1958 he invited the poet to his birthday dinner, where – according to a Ministry of the Interior report – Weöres became intoxicated and attacked József Fodor, whom he believed had betrayed the revolution.

Weöres used the 14-page notebook for drafts and notes. It contains versions of poems such as Kövirózsa (Houseleek), Réti csokor (Meadow Bouquet), Románc (Romance), and Kárhozat (Damnation), translations of Po Csü-ji, as well as numerous unidentified poem fragments. In addition, an unknown travel diary with imaginary cities, related maps, lists, a Mandarin glossary, and drawings adds further colour to the contents. Undoubtedly a sensational literary rarity of particular importance among the poet’s surviving manuscripts.
