379. Count László Teleki (1810–1861), politician...
... Hungarian diplomatic envoy in Paris. Autograph letter to Sándor Mednyánszky, addressed as „Kedves Barátom!” (My dear friend).
He asks that the enclosed “journal” be treated with the utmost confidence, and that “Sz. Imre” (perhaps Colonel Imre Szabó) also be warned, since “it contains matters which might compromise our cause if they reached the public.” He asks to remind Countess Károlyi to return the journals in her possession. Turning to politics, he is sure of an imminent war – meaning the Crimean conflict and Austria’s involvement. He writes: “it is certain that neutrality will not be permitted to the Austrians, from either side; within a few weeks one may see Franz Joseph among the enemies of the West, in the Austrian [surely meant Russian] camp.” Austria, though initially trying to remain neutral, was pressured by the Western powers, even with promises of support for the Hungarian émigrés. In the end, after the Russian occupation of part of Wallachia, they entered the war – dashing Teleki’s hopes. He also asks for the address of Lajos Splényi and for news of the London emigration.
