The weeping Madonna icon preserved in the Piarist church of Kolozsvár – the first Baroque church in Transylvania – was placed there by the Jesuits on 9 September 1724. Alongside the pilgrimage site of Csíksomlyó, the weeping Virgin of Kolozsvár became one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in Transylvania. The miraculous image had originally been painted in 1681 for the wooden church of Füzesmikola by the master Lucas of Iklód, who may have been of Russian or Ruthenian origin; the miraculous weeping, which lasted several weeks, occurred in 1699. The present volume is the second edition of the work first published in 1735, recounting from the beginnings until 1742 “some miraculous interventions of the Weeping Virgin in dangerous illnesses”.
20th-century cloth. Some leaves slightly stained, some restored.
