The prayer book of the cultivated Transylvanian court councillor is one of the most beautiful Hungarian books of the eighteenth century and the first Hungarian-language edition of the Litany of Loreto. The highly decorative plates were engraved by the Viennese artist Jacob Adam. In his undeservedly neglected literary history, Zsigmond Bodnár wrote of Cserey’s principal work: “He transformed the Litany of the Virgin Mary into verse form… In the opening verses we encounter cross-rhymes and lines of eight and seven syllables. Thereafter he adopts the beloved Balassi stanza of the age and sings through the entire litany in this form. One cannot deny the author taste and refinement; genuine feeling and true warmth flow through his lines…”
