The Flemish-born humanist author was a friend of Antal Verancsics. Between 1556 and 1562, he was the ambassador of Ferdinand I in Constantinople. His most important work was his travelogue, and he discussed the struggle against the Ottomans in several anti-Turkish manifestos.
