28. János Pilinszky (1921-1981), poet.
Autograph letter in French to Daniel Weissbort.
The recipient, English poet, translator, and founder of the literary journal Modern Poetry in Translation, was co-editor of the journal with Ted Hughes. Weissbort greatly admired Pilinszky and later wrote in his book Letters to Ted that, apart from Ferenc Juhász, Pilinszky was the only Hungarian poet who truly interested him.
In the letter, Pilinszky thanks him for sending recent issues of the journal and Ted Hughes’s address, and he recommends his own poems – presumably in connection with the English translations then in progress.
Hand-addressed envelope enclosed. This piece does not appear in the collected letters; in fact, no other letter by Pilinszky to Weissbort is known.
2 written pages.
