232. Anna Lesznai (1885–1966), writer and graphic artist.
Autograph letter to Edit Gyömrői.
Lesznai and Gyömrői were “both independent, creative women, active in many fields (and compelled to move frequently). They likely first met in 1918 at the meetings of the Sunday Circle, and despite interruptions and geographical distance, their friendship lasted until Lesznai’s death” (Anna Borgos: “Kerted tele van virággal…” Gyömrői Edit és Lesznai Anna barátsága). After the fall of the Hungarian Soviet Republic, both emigrated to Vienna; later Gyömrői moved to Ceylon and London, while Lesznai settled in the United States. Their deep friendship endured throughout, mostly through correspondence, with only a few personal meetings.
In this letter, Lesznai gives a detailed opinion on Gyömrői’s forthcoming work, Megbékélés(published in Hungarian in 1979). She comments on the characters, praises the style, and asks to keep the manuscript longer. She also writes about her health: “I have simply become exhausted and perhaps a little senile as a result.”
Several letters from Lesznai to Gyömrői are known, mostly from the 1940s and 50s, but such a late one – dated only two years before her death – was previously unknown.
