With an inscription on the first leaf: „Rippl Rónai József urnak a magyar piktura kemény hősének szeretetteljes tisztelettel Móricz” (To József Rippl-Rónai, the steadfast hero of Hungarian painting, with affectionate respect. Zsigmond Móricz). The writer and the painter were close friends. Rippl-Rónai’s portrait of Móricz remains the most famous depiction of him. Upon the artist’s death in 1927, Móricz bade farewell with deeply personal lines in Nyugat.
