The author's last work published during his lifetime. The dedication is addressed to Lajos Batthyány's older daughter, Emma. Its importance in literary history is provided by the poem “Előszó”, which, according to most literary historians, was initially written for this work but only published in print in 1865. With its gloomy tone, born of the bitterness and hopelessness felt due to his persecution and the failure of the struggle for freedom, this poem is considered one of the most significant pieces of the age.
