The author’s most important work and one of the masterpieces of Hungarian drama. Its inspirations are usually identified as Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Albert Gergei’s sixteenth-century tale Árgirus királyfi. At the time of publication it achieved little success, and even fellow writers recognised its merits only later. Probably because of its social criticism, the Pest censorship did not permit its printing, therefore it was published in Fehérvár in an edition of 500 copies. Presumably owing to its small print run and literary significance, it became one of the great desiderata of Hungarian book collectors over the past century and a half.
