193. (Hindenburg, Carl Friedrich): Ueber den Schachspieler...
... des Herrn von Kempelen. Nebst einer Abbildung und Beschreibung seiner Sprachmaschine.
Leipzig, 1784. Johann Gottfried Müller. 56p.+1 folding appx(s).
Farkas Kempelen was one of the most interesting figures of his time, a true polymath. He was exceptionally talented in the fields of literature and fine arts, spoke eight languages, drained swamps and designed buildings. However, it was his inventions that made him truly famous. Among these, two works discussed in the volume stood out: the talking machine and the chess-playing automaton nicknamed "The Turkish Chess Player". These brought him worldwide fame, and numerous works were written about them in several languages, all of which are now prized items at international auctions. The author of this work was a mathematician and professor at the University of Leipzig. This is the first (and only) edition of this study. To our knowledge, it has not yet appeared at any domestic auction.
