189. Schödel, (Márton) Martinus: Disquisitio historico-politica...

... de regno Hungariae: quam... Dn. Matthia Berneggero, historiarum in eadem Professore... subjicit auctor ~ Posonio-Hungarus

Arcentorati [!], 1629. Typis Johannis Reppi. (201)p. The title page is in an ornate engraved frame (by Jacobus ab Heyden), with views of Strassburg and Strassburg College at the bottom and top, and allegorical figures around the text.

Following the recommendation to Miklós Eszterházy, Ferdinand II, and the superiors of Bratislava, we can read Matthias Bernegger's letter to the author's father, Johann Schödel, praising his son's work. Next are a few laudatory poems for the author and his work, two of which were written by Schödel's schoolmate (of Hungarian origin). The list of published works related to Hungary at the end of the "Prooemium" is considered the first bibliographic attempt of its kind. Spectacular copperplate intertextual illustrations can be found throughout the work, and at the end, a full-page depiction of the Hungarian Holy Crown is seen. Afterwards, some engravings show "Hunnus antiquus" and "Hungara antiqua", followed by numismatic figures. The work ends with a very interesting picture: a portrait of Márk Baksay with the inscription "Marcus Baxam Ungarus". The right eye of the Hungarian captain fighting against the Turks was pierced by a spear, the point of which comes out of the back of his head, and blood flows from his eyes and neck. From the text below the picture, we learn the history of the illustration: Baksay, after being stabbed in the head by the Turks, continued to fight the enemy for a long time.

The German National Bibliography describes five versions (these can be distinguished based on the title page and the recommendation).
