189. de Jode, Gerard: Hungariae totius...
... uti ex compluribus aliorum geographicis chartis
Antwerpen, 1593.
A rare, contemporary-coloured copperplate map of Hungary by Matthias Zündt from Gerard de Jode’s Speculum Orbis Terrae, published in 1593 by his son, Cornelis de Jode. The atlas was issued only twice – in 1578 and 1593 – and very few surviving copies exist today. Cartographically, the map is based on Augustin Hirschvogel’s unfinished 1552-53 depiction of Hungary, which in turn is derived from an earlier Lázár map. Its topographical and toponymic accuracy makes it one of the most precise Hungarian maps of the 16th century. The lower right corner features a fine Renaissance cartouche decorated with the Hungarian coat of arms and two putti; the engraver added a compass divider marking the scale bar and a wind rose in the centre to enhance the map field.
Dimensions: 295 × 490 (440 × 600) mm. Slight discolouration along the centrefold.
Szántai: Jode 2b.
Starting price: 600 000,-
