185. Zatta, Antonio: Atlante novissimo...
... illustrato ed accresciuto sulle osservazioni e scoperte. Fatte dai piu’ celebri e piu’ recenti geografi. Tomo IV.
Venice, 1785. 1pl(s). (engraved title page)+(2)p. (table of contents)+44 coloured map(s)
The fourth (and last) volume of one of the 18th century’s most impressive and comprehensive atlases. It was prepared for the Italian revision (“Nuova Geografia”) of the geographical treatise “Erdebeschreibung” by Anton Friedrich Büsching. The 4-part series is Zatta’s most famous work, whose maps were engraved by Giuliano Zuliani and Giovanni Marco Pitteri (see our previous item).
While the first three volumes mainly present European territories, our volume introduces the reader to other parts of the known world on maps of Africa, Asia (Arabia, India, the Philippines, China, Japan etc.), Australia, and South America, and – as a note on the index of volume 4 explains – at the time of the publication of volume 1, depictions of North America were also included in volume 4 due to the ongoing wars between the colonies. Zatta finished the monumental work with 12 pages showing the ancient world.
Contemporary vellum. Waterstains on the lower corners of the pages.
