... atque edita, per Ioannem Sambucum Pannonium...

Köln, 1600. Iohan Buxemacher.

Contemporary-coloured, copper-engraved map of Hungary by Matthias Quad, based on the influential 16th-century work of János Zsámboky. Zsámboky’s map first appeared in Abraham Ortelius’ “Theatrum Orbis Terrarum”, regarded as the first modern atlas. Quad’s version was published in the ”Geographisch Handtbuch”, a widely distributed, small-format atlas of the period. The map presents the Carpathian Basin with detailed toponymy, depicting settlements, major geographical features, relief, and hydrography, with particular emphasis on the drainage systems of the Danube and the Tisza. The title appears in an elegant frame in the lower right corner, crediting Zsámboky as the source. The lower left contains the bar scale, while the upper section features a dedication to Archduke Charles of Habsburg (“Sereniss. Principi D. Carolo Archiduci, Maximiliani II fratri dicatum”). German text on verso.

Dimensions: 190 × 280 (210 × 300) mm. Fine, clear copy. Framed.
