179. de Fer, Nicolas: Le Golfe De Mexique...

... Et les Provinces et Isles qui l’Environe comme sont La Floride Au Nord Le Mexique ou Nouvelle Espagne...

Paris, 1717.

Copper-engraved chart of the Gulf of Mexico, depicting the region from the Mississippi Delta to the northern coastline of South America. The map is based on Guillaume de L’Isle’s landmark 1701 chart of the region and was engraved by Pieter Starckman. It presents a more focused depiction of the Caribbean basin and was issued as a separate sheet. Compared to de L’Isle’s widely disseminated map, de Fer’s version is considerably rarer.

Nicolas de Fer and Guillaume de L’Isle, both serving as royal geographers, had access to the most up-to-date geographical knowledge and official sources of their time. Although their professional relationship remains unclear, their works reveal a close interplay of influence, reflecting both competition and the exchange of cartographic information.
