Rome, 1554.

A rare, early regional map of southwestern Europe. The cartographer is unknown; it was presumably made in one of the Lafreri Schools’ workshops. In 16th-century Europe – until Ortelius’ “Theatrum Orbis Terrarum” – all of the publishers printed separate map sheets of different sizes, of which Lafreri was the first – still a relatively small publisher – to compile uniform-sized volumes from the available stock according to the customer’s request (for this reason, some pieces had to be folded, and to others margins added), and engraved title page for these colligates. These cartographic collections are now called IATO (Italian, Assembled To Order) or Lafreri atlases. The map field extends from the English Channel in the north to the Strait of Gibraltar in the south. In the west-east direction, it includes the entire Iberian Peninsula and northern Italy extending to Istria. In addition to topographical elements, the engraver illustrated his work with engraving vignettes used to depict significant cities and some places of worship, as well as amazingly detailed galleys.

Dimensions: 375 x 475 (465 x 565) mm. Fine, clean copy.

Bifolco – Ronca: Tav. 234.
