176. De Jode, Gerard: Tertiae Partis Asiae...

... quae modernis India orientalis dicitur acurata delineatio Autore Iacobo Castaldo Pedemontano

Antwerpen, 1593.

Rare map of East Asia by Gerard de Jode, which was published in the second edition of de Jode’s “Speculum Orbis Terrae”. According to the title, it is based on Giacomo Gastaldi’s map. The representation spans from Mongolia to the Philippines (north to south) and from India to China (west to east). The nomenclature is detailed – considering the possibilities available at the time – and the lack of geographical information is covered by depictions, topographical elements and larger fonts. The engravers, Jan and Lucas van Deutecum, added a finely decorated cartouche and a compass rose as illustrations. Latin text on verso.

Dimensions: 325 x 500 (375 x 530) mm. There is a paper strip on the back along the centrefold, and a repaired tear and a few stains in the middle of the upper part.

van der Krogt III.: 8400:32.; Koeman II.: Jod2 10.; Suárez: 130-157 old.
