All we know about the author is what he reveals about himself on the title page: "royal normal school teacher". The book's publication was enthusiastically welcomed by the first Hungarian-language newspaper, the Magyar Hírmondó (Hungarian Herald) of Pozsony (issue 2, 1780): "the very first gentleman who wrote a German language teaching book in Hungarian for the benefit of Hungarians. Our nation has long needed such a book; indeed, students have been longing for one. There are plenty of Hungarian grammars written in German, but (as far as I know) only one in German and Hungarian." This first edition of Kratzer's pioneering grammar was published three more times in the 18th century.
