172. Mercator, Gerard: Udrone, Irlandiae in Catherlagh Baronia
Amsterdam, 1613.
Contemporary-coloured, copper-engraved map of Carlow County in southeastern Ireland by Gerard Mercator. The map depicts the territory of the Barony of Udrone (Idrone) along the River Barrow, with detailed toponymy, hydrography, and topography. The Barrow and Slaney rivers play a prominent role, defining the landscape as the region’s principal hydrographic features. The mountain relief is shown by characteristic hill shading, while forested areas are indicated by stylised tree symbols. The map’s notable accuracy suggests that its maker relied on up-to-date, survey-based sources in its compilation. The composition is adorned with an elegant cartouche, above which a bar scale marked with dividers is placed.
