168. Hondius, Henricus: Mappa Aestivarum Insularum, alias Barmudas dictarum…

Amsterdam, 1633.

Contemporary coloured map of Bermuda by Henricus Hondius. The map is based upon Richard Norwood’s 1618 survey (first published by John Speed). The chart below the map field, which contains the owners’ details, is flanked on the sides by the coats of arms of the British Empire and Bermuda. The engraver also used a compass rose and two cartouches as illustrations. Given the lack of explanatory text on the back of most copies, it is assumed that it was distributed as a separate sheet or as part of a composite atlas.

Dimensions: 395 x 515 (405 x 525) mm. Restored copy.

van der Krogt: 9660:1.1.; Koeman II.: Me 200.

Starting price: 200 000,-
