167. Hondius, Jodocus – Mercator, Gerard: Cuba Insula...

... / Hispaniola Insula / Insula Jamaica / Ins. S. Ioannis / I.S. Margareta Cum Confiniis

Antwerpen, 1606.

Maps of the Greater Antilles by Jodocus Hondius based on the cartographic work of Gerard Mercator. One of Hondius’ most successful undertakings was the revision of Mercator’s atlas. After acquiring the Mercator plates, he expanded the new edition with 36 additional engravings, most of which he made himself. After his death, his sons continued his work, and after 1633, his son-in-law, Jan Jansson, joined the business.

The illustrations, displayed in separate fields on the page, are regional maps of Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Cuba – where a side map of Havana is also located in the upper right corner –, Hispaniola, and the much more distant Margarita Island. These were illustrated by the engraver with finely decorated cartouches, galleys, and numerous sea monsters.

Dimensions: 360 x 495 (420 x 520) mm. Clean print in good condition, with a tiny, repaired hole in the middle part.

van der Krogt I.: 9610:1.A.; Koeman II.: Me 142a-e.
