... pour connoitre les progress & les conquestes les plus Remarkables des Provinces-Unies, Ainsy que celles des Compagnies d’Orient et d’Occident. Et les Pais quelles possedent dans l’un et dans l’autre Hemisphere

Amsterdam, 1705.

Decorative copperplate world map that appeared in the first volume of Chatelain’s 7-volume Atlas Historique. The depiction commemorates the successful expeditions and colonisation of the Dutch East and West India Company, the world’s first joint-stock company. Between the western and eastern hemispheres is the coat of arms of the Netherlands, with a rampant lion holding a drawn sword and a quiver of arrows, and below, as an allegory of Europe, sits a female figure protected by the Dutch lion. In addition to the map field, the engraver illustrated the sheet with a galley on two sides, and the logos of both parts of the company appear at the top. California is depicted as an island (as in our previous lot), and the coastlines of Australia and New Zealand are highly incomplete and based mainly on assumptions. Chatelain included detailed explanations for the cities and events marked with numbers on the map field, the location of which is aided by a frame marked with upper and lower case letters.
