165. Chatelain, Henri Abraham: Mappemonde...
... ou description generale du globe terrestre
Amsterdam, 1705.
Decorative copperplate world map that appeared in the first volume of Chatelain’s 7-volume Atlas Historique. The striking elements of the sheet are the continuous coastline of Australia and the „unknown southern continent” (Terres Australes Inconnues), the absence of New Zealand, and ~ although it is correctly shown on the map of America published in the same volume ~ the depiction of California as an island. The cartographer supplemented the representation with several notes on expeditions and also displayed the sea routes of the great explorers (including Magellan, Le Maire, Schouten, and Drake). Athanasius Kircher’s depiction of the sun and Giovanni Domenico Cassini’s 1679 moon map appear in the upper two corners. On the bottom third of the sheet are some topographical term explanations and a list of the most important geographical locations and capitals that are grouped by continent. Their position on the map can be easily identified based on the letters in the frame.
Dimensions: 335 x 445 (375 x 500) mm.
