The first Hungarian viticultural and oenological periodical also appeared in Hungarian under the title “Magyarország bortermesztését ‘s készitését tárgyazó folyóirás”. Two further issues were published in 1838.
The Moravian-born author and editor was a pioneer of Hungarian viticulture. Dr Gusztáv Geday later characterised his undertaking as follows: “His aim was to provide a journal for Hungarian viticulture and winemaking, which still groaned under the chains of empiricism, and, as he wrote, ‘to offer the most effective assistance possible in eradicating prejudices, abandoning purely empirical methods and deeply rooted carelessness, and thereby leading to a more rational, purposeful, and profitable cultivation and use of the vine.’ He wrote the journal in a popular style, sold it cheaply, charging only printing costs, and wished to place at least one copy in every village.”
Slightly worn and stained, contemporary hardpaper.
