Decorative copperplate map of North America by Henri Abraham Chatelain. Based on Guillaume de L’Isle’s most influential map of North America in 1700, published in Chatelain’s 7-volume encyclopedic work „Atlas Historique”, issued between 1705 and 1720. The depiction shows California as a peninsula, and the surrounding Channel Islands also appear. However, the source of the Mississippi was marked much further in the north, and the cartographer slightly exaggerated the size of Florida. The nomenclature is highly detailed, although the English colonies seem to be downplayed. The text section on the right combines the information and geographical observation: it gives the location of the native American tribes inhabiting the region - marked with letters on the map field.
