161. Szerb Antal (1901-1945), writer. Autograph postcard to György Sárközi.

The addressee of the postcard is a poet, editor of the journal "Válasz", and initiator of the sociographic series "Magyarország felfedezése"; one of the leading figures of the “népi írók” (folk writers’) movement. He was Antal Szerb’s close friend. They met during their university years, when they founded a circle of friends called the “Barabások”. This group also included the two Szedő brothers, László and Mihály, later monks, the inspirers of the figures of the “Utas és holdvilág”; Vilmos Juhász, who relaunched “Vigília”, the critic of “Nyugat”; Gábor Halász and György Sárközi. He was sent to a labour camp in Balf with the latters. According to recollections, on 15 December 1944, Antal Szerb had the opportunity to escape, but he refused to leave without his friends, and all three died there.
