161. de Jode, Cornelis: Brasilia et Peruvia.

Antwerp, 1593.

Rare, beautifully coloured, copperplate map of South America, based on Petrus Plancius’ wall map of 1592. It was prepared for the second edition of „Speculum Orbis Terrarum”, edited by Cornelis de Jode, and is the second representation of the area published in a folio-sized atlas (preceded by Gerard de Jode’s „Peruvi...” in the 1578 atlas, whose engravers were Jan and Lucas Deutechum). The map field includes Central America and the Caribbean islands in the north and extends beyond the Strait of Magellan to Tierra del Fuego in the south, which does not appear as an island but as the coastline of an unknown continent: „Terra Australis”. In addition to detailed topography and nomenclature, the map contains numerous descriptions based on the notes of contemporary explorers, which present the natives and the strangest animals. He illustrated his works with countless engraved vignettes displaying the customs of the natives (including cannibalism), attires, battles, and native animals mentioned in the descriptions, in addition to the usual sea monsters and galleys. Latin text on verso.
