Debreczenben, 1692. Kassai Pál ny. 338+(22)p.+1 folding appx(s).

The author was a student in Patak, then taught at the Reformed Gymnasium in Kassa. When the school was closed, he went abroad and studied at the universities of Groningen and Leiden. He returned home in 1678 and was conscripted into the army, but the people of Debrecen ransomed him and invited him to be the third professor at the college, where he taught geography, history, mathematics, and later theology and logic. It was here that he compiled his work containing the best-known data on the history, life and culture of the Huns and Hungarians in the Middle Ages, as well as on the natural conditions of the country. The quotation of the well-known saying about history as the teacher of life suggests that it was mainly intended as a textbook for the students of the college. A great virtue of our copy is that it contains a sketch map of Pannonia, created exclusively from typesetting, which is missing from most copies or is found only in a badly damaged state. In the year following Lisznyai's death, two more of his historical works were published by the Debrecen press. The provenance of this copy is interesting: its previous owner was one of the greatest Hungarian book collectors of the 20th century (a private antiquarian from the 1960s), Dr. Béla Forgács, who acquired it through an exchange with the Academic Library. (The cover bears the stamp of the M. Academia Library, and the flyleaf contains a note about the transaction.)

Modern leather. Some leaves stained.
