159. De Jode, Gerard: Natoliam...

... moderni dicunt eam partem quam Asiam minorem appellauere veteres. / Turcia Turcicive Imperii...

Antwerp, 1578.

Regional copperplate map of the Eastern Mediterranean and Asia Minor. It appeared in the first (1578) edition of Gerard de Jode’s „Speculum Orbis Terrae”. The engraver – Jan van Deutechum – placed the title in two cartouches (as geographical identification – „Natolia” – in one and as Ottoman Empire in the other) and illustrated his work with three finely detailed galleons. Besides the thorough nomenclature, he also depicted Noah’s Ark on the top of Mount Ararat. The identificational plate number („X”) is missing, but the Latin text’s typography on the verso is identical to the 1578 issue.

Dimensions: 385 x 510 (415 x 545) mm.

Fine, delicately coloured, clear copy. With existing export licence.

van der Krogt (III): 8100:32 (state 1).

Starting price: 350,000 HUF
