152. Teréz Karacs (1808–1892), writer, educator.
Autograph letter to Dr. Pál Kovács, addressed "Kedves Doctor úr!" (Dear Doctor!).
The addressee and the author had been close friends since 1827, when Kovács was still a medical student. Teréz was the daughter of the renowned engraver-cartographer Ferenc Karacs and writer Éva Takács. Their salon was frequented by many of the leading intellectuals of the age. At their home, under the organisation of András Fáy and Mihály Vitkovics, one of Kovács’s plays was performed, with the participation of the Karacs sisters themselves. Thus it is understandable that Teréz begins the letter with family matters before turning to news from Pest. She writes enthusiastically about the construction of the Pesti Magyar Színház (Hungarian Theatre of Pest), designed by Mátyás Zitterbarth: "May heaven grant its rapid growth; its nurturer is not truly Hungarian – as the name Cziterbart suggests – but I believe its offspring will surely become Hungarians." She then mentions the installation of public lighting in the city.
3 written pages, with red wax seal.
Dated Pest, October 14, 1835.
