Telegdi's main work is a three-volume book of sermons corresponding to Péter Bornemisza's "hasas és potrohos" books, which he began publishing in Vienna in 1577, but in the same year, with the support of King Rudolf and the Esztergom chapter, he purchased the printing equipment of the Viennese Jesuits, which was no longer in use. He set up the new printing press in his own house in Nagyszombat, and the second and third volumes of his collection of sermons were printed there (see our next two items). In 1638, the complete work was published for the second time in Vienna.
The author was one of the greatest figures of the Counter-Reformation. He became a canon in Esztergom, archbishop's vicar, and then bishop of Pécs. As a humanist-educated prelate, he played an important role in the development of the Hungarian Baroque literary language as a precursor to Pázmány. He is credited with transforming Nagyszombat into a Catholic cultural centre. His polemic with Péter Bornemissza gave rise to significant works of Hungarian religious literature.
