Kolosvaratt, 1690. Némethi Mihály. (12)+320+(4)p.

First edition of the first independent medical work published in Hungarian.

Known as the “Hungarian Hippocrates”, Ferenc Pápai Páriz studied at Gyulafehérvár, Marosvásárhely, Nagyenyed, Kolozsvár (at the school of János Apáczai Csere), and later at Leipzig, Marburg, and Heidelberg, earning his medical doctorate at Basel. Returning home in 1675, he first established his reputation as a physician. When it became clear that medicine could not provide him with a secure livelihood despite his aristocratic and princely patients, Miklós Bethlen persuaded him to become professor of Greek, physics, and logic at the college of Nagyenyed.

The summit of his encyclopaedic oeuvre was a five-part series published at Kolozsvár: “Pax animae” (1680), “Pax corporis” (1690), “Pax aulae” (1696), “Pax sepulcri” (1698), and “Pax crucis” (1710). His most famous work, “Pax corporis”, was the first medical book in Hungarian written by a native author and intended as a practical handbook “for poor and helpless people”. Its medical outlook reflects the highest scientific standards of the age, seeking cures through physical and experimentally verified methods. At the same time, herbal remedies, dietetics, and hygienic treatments still coexist with elements of folk superstition and quackery. The work surveys illnesses and their treatments from head to foot, with separate sections devoted to gynaecological problems and fevers not associated with any particular body part. Pápai Páriz also coined and introduced numerous Hungarian medical terms. This pioneering work went through eleven editions over eighty-four years and also circulated in manuscript copies. RMK records only four complete and two imperfect copies.

Restored half leather.
